Music Single Permission

Once we had chosen our own unknown artist, we then chose to contact the group to gain acception by the group to use their single for our music video activity.

Dear 4 kicks,
we are a media group studying at Graveney sixth form. We are asking for your permission to create a video for your music single “I never get lost except by your side” as part of our media groups coursework at A-level. We will also be creating an album cover for the band as part of our media coursework.

We also ask for you to send us a copy of the lyrics for the single or a picture of the band if possible.

Following the email sent to 4kicks, they replied accepting our request to use there single and sent us the mp3 to the song and the lyrics typed up for our group to use and relate to the music video. The band also sent us images of the band which we may later use and the images also give us an insight into the band and image the band put accross.

Music Video Treatment

Music video Treatment

The music video to our chosen song ‘Never Get Lost by Your Side’ is set to be a narrative based video with added performance shots of the artist. As the lyrics to the song are based on a possible breakdown in a relationship between a boy and girl due to cheating and lies, we decided to follow the story and base the narrative on the cheating and lies of a female on her boyfriend. In our video we chose to flip common conventions on the head as we decided to have a female as the cheat instead of the male. This is due to us basing the principle character on the lead singer of ‘4kicks’, and to get the audience thinking about the relationship of the two and to shed a better light on females.

Scene 1

The opening scene to our music video is set to represent a flashback of the male as he is shown to be thinking about the good times in his relationship with the female. The first shot to our music video is set to be is a romantic location as the boy and girl look to be in love with each. Other. This shot will then zoom out and out from a picture of the boy and girls. This will then cut to shots as the male gets up out of bed. The shots will be taken of the male getting up and getting ready to leave his house such as having a wash.

Scene 2

The following scene will be based on the male as he leaves home to set out on a normal day in his life. A number of different shots will be taken as the male walks from his house to the café location. At this point, the male will look into the window of the café as we are able to see the cheating girl with another male together in the café with passionate facial expressions. This leads to the principle male character to walk on and follows the lyrics as the female is shown with another boy.

Scene 3

The male character then walks on from the café as again a number of different shots are taken to present the character walking a distance. The male then turns off the pavement onto a high street as a P.O.V shot is taken of the male locking eyes with other unknown females. The tracking P.O.V shot then shows someone walking into the male, As the male turns around to see who had barged him, the cheating female is seen yet again with another male eating popcorn which could represent that the female is also seeing and having a romantic time with yet another different male.

Scene 4

The scene then follows on to the principle male feeling very shocked as he carries on seeing his ex girlfriend with plenty of other males. He begins to start running from the scene as he is shown to be all over the place. As he is running from the scene, the cheating female keeps on intervening in every shot as no matter where the male goes he keeps on seeing the females face.

Scene 5

As the male stops to catch his breath in the final location, we see a hand come into the shot and tap the male on his shoulder. A reaction shot is then used as he audience are set to believe that the hand belongs to the cheating female although when the camera turns, we see a different female though she looks very similar to the cheating female previously. The two begin to talk and close up shots are taken as the boy and girl present passionate facial expression as the audience see romance between the boy and girl. The boy and girl then begin to walk until they come to a stop and turn and face. As the two face each other, we can see the cheating female in the background distance of the shot. When the shot cuts to the male and back to the shot of the boy and new girl facing, the female in the background disappears which shows that the male is finally over and rid of the cheating female.

Benjamin Cross

This is the principle character for our music video and allows us to strongly relate the presence of our principle character to our indie music genre. The actor has long curly hair, which was most common within our research into the selling of indie artist the their audience. The style of our principle character is also effective as we are able to present our male in tight fitting dark clothes including a loose neck t shirt as represented in our image and also fits into the indie image and relates to the research I had done into how the artist is represented in their music videos.

Jenny Chivers

This is our chosen principle female character for our music video. Our female actor is also important as she also fits into the indie genre image as she seems to be individualistic in her style and her image is similar to those I had researched in other music videos. The female will also attract a male audience as she is a young female with an attracting figure.

Tahir Sharif

Tahir is our second male and is effective as he is a tall solid male, which will represent why the female has fallen for him. Tahir does not need to fit into the indie genre as the principle female character, will cheat on the principle male with anyone. Tahir also has a passionate smile, which can also be effective when recording him on a date with the female.

Alastair Duncan

Our third male character is also important as he suits the male genre as his long curly hair and skiiny figure represents the common indie image. Olly is also important as he will attract a female audience.

Genie Abbott

Our final female ends the music video with the male and also suits the character we needed. The female would also attract a male audience and fit into the common representation of an indie based image. She wears the same costume as his ex-girlfriend, which reminds him off his-ex however they seem to be interested in each other by giving eye contact. His ex does find out however she fades away when the two new couple meet.

Music Video Location

Scene 1

This image is of the opening scene in which we chose to film the male getting ready whilst at home in the video. We are going to film the opening scene from the inside of the house. The house is a good place to record the scene as the location can be seen as a middle class urban area, which can be used to relate back to our target audience. The interior of the house is also very spacious and allows us to create a better area to record our scene.

Scene 2

This is where the café scene will be shot. We chose this location, as it is a quite area and had the layout we chose for our café. The location is also set in a nice and quiet area as the café allows us to create a romantic location for the girl and second male.

Scene 3

This location is a good place to record for our shot as it is based on a high street and also has a quiet lane down the middle of the cinema and shopping centre for us to record the scene. The ODEAN cinema is also effective as we are going to feature the cheating girl and a third male together carrying popcorn. The popcorn will be used to symbolize that the boy and girl have just been to the cinema, which is a common place for a couple to go and have a romantic time.

Scene 4

This location is a good setting, as in this scene the boy will be running from the girl as the girl intervenes no matter where he goes. The location is effective as it is set in a quiet region and will leave the audience more surprised as the girl can come out from the corner which would not have been expected which gives a more weird feel that is what we needed for the scene.

Scene 5

This is a good location for this scene as it has everything we needed for the scene. The railings surrounding the park allow us to have the boy lean on them and catch his breath until the new female approaches. The park is also a quiet location and gives a nice family feel with the flowers and open grass, which allows us to make he scene more intimate and romantic, as the park is very big. We are able to use the scene where we have the boy and girl facing as we can see the cheating girl in the distance.

Equipment

A camera is the most important equipment for our music video as the camera will allows us to film the music video. The use of a handy cam is also effective as it allows us to shoot our video from any location without hassle.

A tripod is needed when recording our video, as the tripod will allow us to steady our shots so that we can improve the quality of our video quality. The steadiness of the shot will also make our film look more professional and therefore make our video of better quality.

A cup of tea/coffee is needed for scene 2 in which our location will be set in the café. The scene features the principal female and the second male together in the café as they are seen to have a romantic time. To represent the couple being in a café, a cup of coffee/tea is important to symbolise that the two are in the café and can be on a date.

Popcorn is needed for scene 3 in which the principle male character bumps into his ex outside the cinema as again the female is with another male as the theme of the cheating girl continues. The popcorn is used to symbolise that again a girl is seeing another male as the popcorn represents that they had come out of the cinema together.

I would also like to say thank you for giving us your time and permission to film in your café I really appreciated your help. Sorry to disturb you I would like to know when your available and less busy so we can re-film a two-minute scene. The reason why I would like to use this location its because of my media studies coursework which means that I’m making a short music video so I was wondering if you would give us a second chance to re-film when its less busy. This is because we’ve made a few mistakes on our music video because it was a very busy morning and I was really sorry for wasting your time. I would just like to know if its possible if we can re-film once more in the café area with your permission when the café is less busy?
